Bring Your Own Bag

San Francisco extended the checkout bag ordinance to include all retail establishments (stores) and adding a charge on allowed checkout bags. Shoppers can avoid the charge by bringing their own bag.
Tips for Shoppers
- Put coupons in your bag and keep the bag by the door.
- Hang a few reusable bags on the coat rack or door knob.
- Keep reusable bags in the back seat or trunk of your car.
- Keep a reusable bag at your place of work.
- Keep compact reusable bags in a purse, pocket, or backpack.
Past Checkout Bag Events
Beginning in the fall of 2012, SF Environment kicked off a consumer education campaign with multilingual events throughout the city. Residents asked questions, received free reusable bags, and pledged to use their own bag.
Seventeen thousand free reusable bags have been handed out. The bags were manufactured locally with recycled fabric by Western Textiles, a San Francisco based company founded in 1919. SF Environment partnered with Citibank to educate customers and hand out 10,000 of these reusable bags at Citibank locations in San Francisco.
