Taxi Activity

Under the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) umbrella, the taxi companies are required to reduce their emissions by 20% below 1990 levels by 2012—they are on target.  The taxi companies have already incorporated hybrids into their fleets but in the near future a number of them will also have 100% electric vehicles.  Affectionately called the ZEN (zero emitting neighborhood) Taxi Fleet Program, the SFMTA will acquire approximately 25 EVs for taxi drivers who will service the outer neighborhoods of San Francisco.  To support these EVs, the SFMTA is working to install 2 DC Fast Chargers, one in the City and another at the San Francisco International Airport.  In addition to the ZEN Taxi Fleet Project, the City is also working with Better Place and San Jose to build the first battery switching stations and switchable battery taxi fleet in the nation.
