San Francisco Department of Environment Announces New Manager of Outreach Program
The San Francisco Department of the Environment is pleased to announce a new addition to our senior staff. Dr. Kevin Danaher is now the Manager of our Outreach and Communications Program. In this role he will be responsible for communicating the Department’s diverse messaging to the general public, mobilizing grassroots support for our existing environmental programs, and initiating new public education programs to help make San Francisco the greenest city anywhere.
Dr. Danaher is a founder and Executive Co-Producer of the Green Festivals, the largest sustainability event in the United States. The San Francisco Green Festival happens every November, bringing together more than 350 green economy exhibits, 150 speakers, and more than 30,000 participants. He was also the co-founder of TransFairUSA (1997), the US fair trade certifying agency, now known as FairTradeUSA.
Dr. Danaher has published numerous articles and is the author and/or editor of thirteen books, including his two
latest: “The Green Festival Reader: Fresh ideas from Agents of Change”, with Alisa Gravitz (2008); and "Building the Green Economy: Success Stories from the Grass Roots" with Shannon Biggs and Jason Mark (2007).
An accomplished public speaker, Dr. Danaher has spoken at universities and community organizations throughout the United States. He conducts workshops on issues ranging from the dynamics of the global economy to how we can accelerate the transition to the green economy.
Dr. Danaher received his sociology PhD in 1982 from the University of California at Santa Cruz. After teaching for 5 years in the School of Government at American University in Washington, DC, he moved to San Francisco where he was a co-founder of Global Exchange (1988), the international human rights organization based at 16th and Mission. In that role he helped launch Reality Tours to several dozen countries, and the Global Exchange Fair Trade stores in San Francisco, Berkeley, and other cities.
