Popular Science Magazine rates San Francisco 2nd greenest city in the nation
San Francisco CA--Mayor Newsom announced today that San Francisco has made the "America's 50 Greenest Cities" list as compiled by Popular Science Magazine. Having received a score of 23 out of 30, San Francisco was heralded for its commitment to public transportation and solar power installation.
"San Francisco's environmental accomplishments continue to take national center stage, and this ranking reflects our leadership," said Mayor Newsom. "With more innovation, and continued expansion of our greening and sustainability efforts, I have no doubt that next year San Francisco will be at the top of the list."
San Francisco was followed by Boston, MA; Oakland, CA; and Eugene, OR in the top five. Portland, OR ranked first with a score of 23.1. The magazine used raw data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Geographic Society's Green Guide, which collected information for American cities with populations over 100,000 people. Data was collected in over 30 categories, including air quality and transportation habits. This information was then compiled in to four categories: electricity, transportation, green living, and recycling and green perspective.
