Residential Composting

When you participate in San Francisco's world-class compost program, your food scraps, soiled paper, plants, and other compostables are collected and turned into nutrient-rich soil that helps produce the organic food and wine that San Francisco is famous for. Everyone in San Francisco has access to green carts for compost collection.
If you pay your garbage bill directly you can order a compost carts at no additional cost. Call your service provider Sunset Scavenger at (415) 330-1300 or Golden Gate Disposal & Recycling at (415) 626-4000 to order service, get signs or stickers, and to order a free kitchen pail to make participation in the program easy. By composting and recycling all that you can you may be able to reduce the size of your black cart which could result in a lower garbage bill.
If you are a property manager or owner of an apartment building, you too can get a composting cart for your apartment. Just call your service provider Sunset Scavenger at (415) 330-1300 or Golden Gate Disposal & Recycling at (415) 626-4000. Be sure to request kitchen pails for your tenants; they are included in the service.
If you need assistance, our department can provide free waste assessments for your building to determine how we can increase recycling, add compost service, and reduce garbage which could ultimately save you money on your garbage bill. We also can assist with tenant outreach with a customized program for your building. Please call 415-355-3795 to schedule an appointment or email us your building's address and your contact information. If you are a renter in San Francisco, you too should have access to composting. Call us at (415) 355-3795 or send us an email with your apartment address and property manager's contact information. We will call them directly to set up a waste assessment appointment and discuss the options.
