Water Pollution Prevention

Preventing water pollution saves immeasurable resources, time, and money-and all it takes is a little education and effort. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) Water Pollution Prevention Program was set up to keep pollutants from entering the city's sewer system, storm drains, and eventually San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The program focuses on educating residents, businesses, and city employees so that they can take informed action to protect the health of all living things that come in contact with these waters.

Other SFPUC operations help reduce environmental pollution: The Water Pollution Control Division operates and maintains the city's water pollution control plants, sewage pumping stations, and combined sewer system; and the Pretreatment Program monitors businesses that have been issued permits to discharge wastewater into the city's sewer system.
