Electric Vehicles in San Francisco

With 96% of transportation in the United States fueled by oil and more than half of it imported, oil threatens our national security and the well-being of our environment. Transportation amounts to over half of San Francisco's greenhouse gas emissions. Coupled with other environmental policies and programs, electric vehicles as an alternative form of transportation will reduce the need for oil and help improve quality of life and the environment.
San Francisco's dense population and environmentally friendly consumer demographics make it a perfect city to accelerate the success of electric vehicles. The City of San Francisco is making sweeping efforts to encourage use of electric vehicles and help make it the most electric-vehicle-friendly city in the world.

PHEV FAST FACTS:
- They get up to 100 miles per gallon
- You can recharge the PHEV by plugging it into a standard 110-volt outlet with an extension cord
- They dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional hybrids
- San Francisco's PHEVs use advanced lithium batteries that are added to the Priuses existing battery pack and were supplied by A123 Systems/Hymotion, Inc.
- Pat's Garage, a certified "Clean and Green" San Francisco business converted them
- When they become available commercially, they'll cost about $3,000 more than a conventional hybrid because of the cost of the PHEV battery
