Carpool and Vanpool

Carpool and Vanpool
Want to save money, reduce stress, and help the environment on your way to work? Consider a carpool or vanpool! See our Rideshare Flyer & Request Form for more information.

What is a carpool?

A carpool is when 1 or more commuters share a ride. You may carpool as many days as you want, one-way or roundtrip. Carpool with neighbors, coworkers, family, and friends.

What is a vanpool?

A vanpool is when 7 or more commuters (including the driver) share a van. Vans may be owned by one of the vanpoolers or leased from a vanpool rental company.

What are the benefits of a carpool/vanpool?

  • Share the price of gasoline.
  • Share the price of parking.
  • Share the responsibility of driving.
  • Passengers can use the commute to relax or catch up on work.
  • Enjoy free trips over Bay Area Bridges during commute hours. Check the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) for toll schedules.
  • Get to work faster by riding in the carpool lane.
  • Maintain air quality by reducing traffic congestion.
  • Help mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gases.
  • Vanpool-specific events:
    • Use pre-tax dollars for expenses (see our Commuter Benefits program).
    • Discounted parking in San Francisco.
    • Get $300-$900 in gas cards for new vans.*

*Vans must meet all eligibility requirements. For details, visit rideshare.511.org/vanpooling.
