Commuter Benefits

Do you ride public transit or vanpool to work? Is your drive to work too expensive? If so, you could be saving up to 40% on your commuting expenses!
Commuter Benefits is a federally approved program that allows employee pre-tax deductions up to $230 per month to pay for transit and vanpool expenses. Employees and employers save on their taxes. Pre-tax deductions for transit are a great financial incentive to encourage commuters to use driving alternatives. Using driving alternatives helps relieve traffic congestion and maintains good air quality, making our neighborhoods better places to live and work.

I am an employee. How do I get my employer to offer the benefit?
To participate in commuter benefits, your employer must offer it. Experience shows that most employers institute commuter benefits because their employees asked for it. Here are some steps you can take to get your employer to offer commuter benefits:
- Tell your boss or HR manager about commuter benefits and get them to visit http://www.commuterbenefits.org.
- Give your employer a copy of the Employer's Guide to SF Commuter Benefits.
- Speak with other employees at your work place and have them request commuter benefits.
- Put a note in the suggestion box at your workplace.
- Speak to your union about including commuter benefits as an employee benefit.
