Compostable Bags and Other Products

Composting is easy and liner bags are not required, though many residents and businesses find it easier to participate when they use a compostable bag or container liner. In order for a bag to be accepted in the compost program it has to be certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute as "Compostable" and be marked with the logo shown above.
Other options for handling compostables at home are to use paper bags lined with a layer of newspaper, or to fill old paper milk cartons or paper to-go boxes. Businesses may choose to use a regular plastic liner bag and empty the compostables from the bag directly into their collection cart.
You can buy more compostable bags at any SF Walgreens. Or, here is a map and list of all San Francisco locations where compostable bags approved for use in the city's green cart program can be purchased.
Businesses: You may want to check with your janitorial service provider or contact your vendors to see if they have wholesale pricing for BPI Certified compostable bags.
