Toxics Reduction

There are approximately 70,000 different chemicals in use in the United States, many of which have not been studied for their toxic effects. Tested or not, these chemicals and the everyday products containing them are found in most homes and businesses, or used by services like dry cleaners, pest control companies, and landscape maintenance crews. Some pose a direct danger; others become hazardous when it's time to dispose of them. The list includes paint, batteries, fluorescent lights, cleaning products, electronics, and leftover prescription medicines, among many others.
SF Environment's Toxics Reduction program offers information on environmentally friendly alternatives, safe and convenient disposal of toxic products, and ideas on how to minimize the use of hazardous products and materials.
