Air Quality & Transportation

Air Quality & Transportation
Nearly four billion vehicle miles were traveled within San Francisco city limits in 2000, generating approximately 2.43 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. While the air over the city is generally clean due to geography and ocean winds, the pollution generated by hundreds of thousands of motor vehicles traveling to and from San Francisco pose a serious threat to the quality of air throughout the Bay Area. The city's Climate Action Plan aims not only to reduce those emissions, but to exceed the reductions recommended by the United Nations Kyoto Protocols by the use of alternative fuels, vehicles, and modes of transportation.
