Achievements
Municipal Programs:- Installed a photovoltaic system of 675 kilowatts on the Moscone Convention Center
- Replaced incandescent lights in traffic signals with L.E.D., reducing electricity demand by 1 megawatt, saving $7 million in energy and future maintenance expenses
- Reduced electricity demand by 2 megawatts through energy efficiency retrofits in hospitals, clinics, the convention center, and wastewater treatment plant to produce a savings of $20 million over the next 15 years at an initial cost of $5 million
- Pilot projects in tidal current and wave energy in process; partners include the Electric Power Research Institute and other local governments
Commercial and Residential Programs:
- Energy Watch Program - a partnership with Pacific Gas & Electric Company to provide small businesses and multi-family units with energy saving opportunities including site audits and energy-efficient equipment at lowered costs
- Peak Energy Program - a partnership with Pacific Gas and electric Company that ran through February, 2005. Together, we reduced peak demand by over 12 megawatts by installing a range of energy efficiency measures in hundreds of businesses and thousands of homes, saving more than $9 million in annual electricity and natural gas bills at a program cost of $16 million.
- Generation Solar - a new technical assistance program for residential and commercial photovoltaic systems, for which the city provides a low-cost and streamlined permit process, a set of qualified contractors with pre-negotiated prices, and quality-control site visits; 300 prospective customers signed into the program to date.
- Power Savers Program - reduced the demand for electricity by 6 megawatts by installing energy-efficient lighting in 4,000 small businesses, saving $3.5 million in annual electric bills; earned an Energy Star award from the EPA, a first for a municipality.
- Bayview Hunters Point residents were trained to install solar panels and worked with a solar firm to install 40 solar panels on homes in their neighborhood.
- Thousands of homes and businesses in Bayview Hunters Point and Potrero Hill were given combinations of weatherization, energy retrofits, and energy efficiency devices and appliances to reduce reliance on the nearby fossil-fuel burning power plant.
- Outreach and education aimed at low-income residents about energy conservation and renewable energy.
