Disposal
![]() |
After you've exhausted the options of waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting, take a moment to congratulate yourself. Now look around at what's left. Wonder what to do with the rest of the items you want to get rid of?
Recycle My Junk Program
Free for SF Residents, fee-based for businesses
Available to everyone in San Francisco, the Recycle My Junk picks up a variety of items, often for no additional charge. It's a convenient and eco-friendly way to get rid of used and unwanted items like electronics, appliances, scrap metal, mattresses, motor oil, and even old clothing. Call your service provider, Sunset Scavenger (415)330-1300 or Golden Gate Disposal & Recycling (415)626-4000 to make an appointment. Ask if the program is free for you.
If your item is non-toxic and still in working condition, bring it to your local Goodwill drop off location. For other reuse options, check out our EcoFinder.
If you are a property manager and would like a Wonder Waste Poster for your apartment to inform your tenants of this service, email us at environment@sfgov.org to request a copy or download one here.
Public Disposal and Recycling Area
San Francisco's public disposal and recycling area is open to all city residents and businesses. Non-hazardous materials can be dropped off Monday to Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
Toxic and hazardous materials aren't allowed in black, blue, or green carts. And big items can't fit in them. That's why San Francisco has dozens of drop-off sites throughout the City as well as free pick-up services available to San Francisco residents for bulky items and toxic products. It's all part of making sure that absolutely everything gets properly recycled, reused, or--as a last resort--sent to landfill.
