Wastewater
Every time someone in the city flushes a toilet or washes a dish, the wastewater empties into San Francisco's combined sewer system, a network of more than 1,000 miles of pipelines and tunnels that collect and transport 80 million-plus gallons of wastewater every day to 20 pump stations and three wastewater treatment plants. The clean wastewater is then piped into the bay or ocean.
To keep the system running smoothly and improve its operation, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has created programs that that stress pollution prevention, storm water management, ocean monitoring, and has undertaken the task of creating a new sewer system master plan.
