Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency

How we use energy is just as important as how it's produced and where it comes from. The more efficient we are, the less we need. The less we need, the less we use, and the less harm we do to the environment. The city sees energy efficiency as one of the most important issues we'll face in the 21st century and to that end has developed a Sustainability Plan and Climate Action Plan to reduce electricity and natural gas use in homes and businesses, an Electricity Resource Plan that that set specific goals for reducing energy use, and programs like the Power Savers Program and Peak Energy Program that so far have reduced peak electricity demand by 12 megawatts.

Achievements

  • Specific goals set by the Electricity Resource Plan for the reduction of peak electric demand when San Francisco businesses, residents, and government are collectively using the most electricity-on hot days or on a cold winter nights

  • Six megawatts of electricity saved by retrofitting lighting systems in over 4, 000 small businesses thanks to the Power Savers Program

  • Twelve megawatts saved by retrofitting residential and commercial buildings as per the Peak Energy Program

  • Peak demand reduced by 18 megawatts through successful programs operated by SF Environment
