Pollution Prevention

Diesel pollution causes approximately 15,000 premature deaths and 400,000 asthma attacks in the U.S. every year. People with respiratory diseases, the elderly, children with asthma, and residents of neighborhoods with numerous sources of air pollution are particularly vulnerable-like Bayview Hunters Point. When residents raised concerns about industrial pollution and transportation fumes, the city installed an air monitoring station so that residents could take action to improve conditions. Measures like these will help the city achieve its climate target goals to slash greenhouse emissions by 2012 to a target level set at 20 percent below 1990 emissions. To keep the air clean and protect the health of San Franciscans, SF Environment participates in the Spare the Air Program to notify residents (via radio announcements) and employees of the worst air quality days.

For general air quality information, visit the California Air Resources Board or visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. For San Francisco air quality information, visit Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

For information about air quality and health effects such as asthma, visit the website of the American Lung Association of California.
