Pollution Prevention
Diesel pollution causes approximately 15,000 premature deaths and 400,000 asthma attacks in the U.S. every year. People with respiratory diseases, the elderly, children with asthma, and residents of neighborhoods with numerous sources of air pollution are particularly vulnerable-like Bayview Hunters Point. When residents raised concerns about industrial pollution and transportation fumes, the city installed an air monitoring station so that residents could take action to improve conditions. Measures like these will help the city achieve its climate target goals to slash greenhouse emissions by 2012 to a target level set at 20 percent below 1990 emissions.
