Cleaner Fuels & Vehicles
Given San Francisco's environmentally conscious ways, it's not surprising that the city is also a leader in alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) technology, with over 800 AFVs in its own fleet. Powered by natural gas, electricity, biodiesel, plug-in hybrid demonstration and hybrid technology, these clean air vehicles emit fewer pollutants and contribute to national energy security by reducing oil consumption.
To support the growing alternative fuel industry, San Francisco has secured grants to buy vehicles for the city's fleet, encouraged manufacturers to produce cleaner vehicles, built fueling and recharging stations accessible to the public, and sponsored public exhibits of the latest in clean fuel technology.
Achievements
More than half the city's public transit fleet, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (Muni), is comprised of zero-emission vehicles.More than 100 compressed natural gas (CNG) taxis drive more than one million miles per month.
The city's Clean Air Program earned the American Lung Association of the Greater Bay Area's Clean Air Award for Transportation Programs in 2004.
