Can I recycle plastic bags in the blue recycling cart?
NO. Plastics bags and other soft film plastics (plastic food wrap, soft plastic packaging, etc.) are not accepted in the blue recycling bin.
While materials collected in the blue recycling bin are sorted, plastic bags and plastic film can jam the recyclables sorting machinery and prevent efficient sorting. It is best to recycle plastic bags and other plastic film by bringing them to a grocery and hardware store. Please check RecycleWhere for a plastic film recycling location.
Plastic bags can also be reused to line trash bins or as doggie waste bags, however as of October 2012, the Extended Bag Reduction Ordinance banned plastic bags at the checkout line and requires that all retail establishments charge 10 cents for each acceptable bag provided.
