How do I recycle household batteries?
Batteries are hazardous and must NOT go in any trash, recycling, or composting bin. Disposal options vary based on your housing type.
Please tape over lithium battery contacts. Lithium batteries are marked with "Li" or "Li-ion."
Single-Family Homes and Multifamily Buildings Smaller Than Six Units
Household batteries can be put into a clear plastic bag and placed on top of your black bin on collection day.
Multifamily Buildings Six Units and Above
Your building manager can order a free battery collection bucket by calling Recology at 415-330-1300. Recology will deliver the orange battery recycling bucket to your building.
Any Housing Type
Anybody can drop batteries off at designated locations throughout the city. Use RecycleWhere to find your nearest drop-off center.
