Sustainable Commuting Programs
Newsletter
Commuting can be a stressful and costly part of an employee’s day. One of the most cost-effective ways recruit and retain employees is to provide benefits that make their commute easier and cheaper.
SF Environment provides free assistance to local businesses looking to develop commuter benefits programs. Have us table at your next event or request a free consultation.
Commuter Benefits: Maintaining a commuter benefits program is an easy, inexpensive and effective recruitment and retention tool. Section 132(f) of the IRS tax code provides tax breaks to businesses that assist employees with reducing the cost of their transit, biking or ridesharing commute.
The San Francisco Commuter Benefits Ordinance requires businesses with 20 or more employees (nationwide) to offer a commuter benefits program to their San Francisco employees. Employers subject to the Ordinance must submit a Compliance Reporting Form by April 30th of each year.
Emergency Ride Home: The Emergency Ride Home Program provides employees of participating businesses a free ride home in case of unexpected personal emergencies. Reimbursements and paperwork are provided by SF Environment. All San Francisco businesses are eligible to enroll in this free program.
Rideshare: Using 511's secure service, we can help your employees find others who wish to share a ride to and from work.
Transportation Consulting: We can help you develop a comprehensive, customized transportation program that will save your company money, make employees happier, improve productivity, and decrease time lost in traffic. Submit the consultation request form to learn more.
- Employee Surveys – Determine the current commute habits of your employees, their barriers to using sustainable transportation, and their attitudes about various alternatives. The survey gives you an idea of programs to promote and provides a benchmark to measure success.
- Density Maps – Maps that display employee residential clusters will help determine which commute options could work best for them.
Event and Outreach Assistance: SF Environment can staff health, benefit and transportation fairs at your office. Have your employees talk with us about their commute options. Request our attendance at your next event!

Energy
A dynamic city like San Francisco requires the efficient use of clean, renewable energy to meet the needs of today and future generations. Our innovative policies and programs help San Franciscans use energy wisely, while saving money and reducing environmental impacts.
Transportation
SF Environment aims to reduce travel-created carbon by getting people out of cars and instead traveling by walking, biking or public transit. We also are greening the City fleet of vehicles and encourage the public to reduce their impact by supporting cleaner fuels and vehicles.
Zero Waste
Imagine a world in which nothing goes to landfills or to incinerators. We think it is achievable, and SF Environment is doing everything we can to make it happen.
Toxics & Health
As the first city to adopt the Precautionary Principle, San Francisco strives to protect the health of its residents, visitors and the local environment. SF Environment develops programs and policies to help individuals and businesses make safer choices in products, practices and services.
Buildings & Environments
San Francisco is habitat for 800,000 people – meeting needs for space to work, play, and learn; for food, water, and air; for community with local flora and fauna. SF Environment provides support for urban agriculture and forestry and green buildings, helping residents and businesses harness environmental opportunities.
Education & Equity
SF Environment focuses on building community capacity - engaging people throughout the City’s neighborhoods and providing them with the tools, education, and job opportunities to ensure that the places where we live, play, learn, and work are safe and healthy.
Climate Change
Reducing carbon emissions is central to ensuring a sustainable future for San Francisco. Climate change will bring unstable weather, rising sea levels and damage to our city’s natural habitat and infrastructure. SF Environment is committed to mobilizing the City to deal with Climate Change.
