Mandatory Edible Food Recovery Ordinance

This ordinance requires certain food generators to prevent food from being landfilled or composted by increasing donations to food programs.

The law is designed to reduce the production of methane, which contributes to climate change, and will help the state achieve its climate goals.

Single-Use Food Ware Plastics, Toxics, and Litter Reduction

The law restricts the distribution of plastic straws, among other foodware accessories, including compostable plastic straws. Acceptable single-use straws (such as paper straws) can only be made available upon request. 

 

Starting July 1, 2019, the law restricts the distribution of single-use plastic straws, including compostable plastic straws. Food and beverage vendors may no longer provide the following single-use plastic accessories: plastic beverage plugs, plastic cocktail sticks, plastic stirrers, and plastic toothpicks. This law also applies to event producers and retailers operating in San Francisco.

Refuse Separation Compliance Ordinance

Environment code

This law increases compliance with San Francisco’s mandatory recycling and composting requirements by auditing the refuse (compostables, recyclables, and trash) of large producers, and requiring them to engage staff to ensure adequate material separation, when necessary.

Food Service and Packaging Waste Reduction

The sale of food service ware and packing materials made from polystyrene foam (commonly referred to as "Styrofoam") is prohibited in San Francisco.

 

The Food Service and Packaging Waste Reduction prohibits the sale of food service ware and other specified products including packing materials that are made from polystyrene foam or that are non-recyclable and non-compostable.
