San Francisco residents can request a free home pick up of the waste, find a nearby drop-off location, or go to Recology's Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

Whether you’re moving, cleaning out a loved one’s home, or getting ready for a new baby, safely disposing of hazardous household items is easy.


Common Hazardous Household Items

When you dispose of hazardous household items the wrong way, it can contaminate drinking water, pollute local waterways, and harm wildlife. Exposure could also increase the possibility of headaches, asthma, and other illnesses. Plus, it’s illegal. So, make sure to gather the following common hazardous items and dispose of them safely:

  • Fluorescent and LED light bulbs 
  • Household batteries 
  • Paint 
  • Household cleaners 
  • Aerosol cans 
  • Pesticides

Once you’ve finished gathering all the hazardous items around the home, schedule a pick-up and Recology will collect and safely dispose of items for free.

Some San Francisco retailers collect common hazardous household items like fluorescent and LED bulbs, household batteries, and paint. To find participating retail collection sites, visit www.SFRecycles.org.

 

You can also drop off items for free at San Francisco’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, located at:

Household Hazardous Waste Facility Requirements

  • You must bring proof of San Francisco residency (driver’s license or utility bill) to drop household hazardous waste at this facility 
  • Limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds
  • No drums, compressed gas cylinders (except small or BBQ-sized propane) or containers larger than five (5) gallons
  • Keep hazardous items in their original containers. If an item is leaking, contain it by placing it in a larger container. 
  • Never mix leftover hazardous products with other products. Incompatible products might react, ignite, explode, and become unrecyclable.
