Regular soap is effective for removing common germs. Soaps that are labeled as “antibacterial” or “antimicrobial” contain added chemicals and may negatively impact human and environmental health.
Follow the CDC guidelines for handwashing:
- Wash hands often, especially after visiting a public place, coughing, sneezing, or using a tissue.
- Wash hands using soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Use enough product to coat the surface of the hands and rub hands together until they feel dry.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
