On July 9, 2025, the first electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers opened in the Bayview-Hunters Point community at Bayview Plaza, 3801 3rd Street! Six new high-power fast charging stalls are now publicly available 24/7 to Bayview residents and visitors.

This project was delivered by the San Francisco Environment Department (SFE) in partnership with EVgo, En2Action, and Strategies 360, and was funded in part by the California Energy Commission and Bay Area Air District.

Project background

SFE was awarded funding to select and install a new community-supported EV fast charging plaza in San Francisco.

With input from community leaders, SFE identified Bayview-Hunters Point as a priority community for charging since there were a limited number of public charging stations available in the neighborhood.

SFE worked with the following partners on this project:

En2Action

Strategies 360

En2Action organized, promoted, and hosted community meetings to collect community feedback and identify a list of potential sites that the community supported.

Strategies 360 developed and conducted a community survey to collect input on electric vehicles, chargers, and site characteristics.

EVgo evaluated potential sites, determined if sites met technical requirements, and spoke to property owners to help choose a final site.

Collaborating with residents

En2Action hosted three community meetings in Bayview-Hunters Point at the following locations:

  • Southeast Community Center
  • Bayview Opera House
  • True Hope Church

During the community meetings, SFE and En2Action provided information on EV benefits and incentives and collected feedback on where community members would like to see future public EV charging stations. Attendees used maps of the neighborhood to highlight their favorite sites.

Using community feedback, SFE developed a list of community-supported charging sites and asked EVgo, the project charging partner, to assess site feasibility. For sites to be feasible for this project, they needed to meet technical requirements (e.g., electrical capacity), be accessible to the public 24/7, be large enough to fit multiple chargers, and receive approval from the property owner. Based on these factors, SFE and EVgo identified Bayview Plaza, 3801 3rd Street, as the site for the new fast charging plaza.

Site construction began in November 2024 and the site officially opened on July 9, 2025. To celebrate this milestone, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on July 9, 2025 where Mayor Daniel Lurie and Environment Department Director, Tyrone Jue, were joined by EVgo and members of the community.
