For sandbags that did not come into contact with floodwaters:

  • Place them in the sun and allow them to dry out so that you can use them again in other flood-related situations.
  • If your bags have deteriorated or started to leak, the sand can be placed into new bags or spread on landscape beds.
  • Empty them by dumping sand in your backyard and putting bags in the black landfill bin.
  • Drop the whole bag at no charge at Recology’s Public Disposal Area at 501 Tunnel Ave during open hours, Monday through Saturday from 7am to 4pm.

For sandbags that may have come into contact with floodwater, sewage, or other hazardous materials:

  • Wear gloves and a dust mask when handling potentially contaminated materials.
  • If you believe your sandbag has been exposed to floodwater, sewage, and household hazardous waste such as motor oil or petroleum products, do not empty the bag into your yard space. Dispose of the entire sandbag in the black landfill bin or you can drop off the used bag and sand at Recology’s Public Disposal Area at 501 Tunnel Ave during open hours, Monday through Saturday from 7am to 4pm.
