How to get rid of batteries if you live in a house
If you live in a house or small apartment complex, put loose household batteries in a clear plastic bag and place on top of the black/gray bin.
Batteries contain toxins that can contaminate soil and water and when improperly disposed of, they can start fires.
Batteries from cars, e-bikes, vaping devices, laptops, and cell phones are not accepted.
How to get rid of batteries if you live in a large complex
Simply place household batteries in the orange bucket located in your building.
When the bucket is full, anyone can call (415) 330-1300 for a free pickup!
If your building doesn't have an orange collection bucket, your property manager can order one from Recology for free or find the nearest retail collection partner by visiting SFRecycles.
Batteries from cars, e-bikes, vaping devices, laptops, and cell phones are not accepted.
Take special care with lithium batteries
Tape over lithium battery contacts. Look for "Li" or "Lithium." If left uncovered, they can cause fires if they come in contact with other batteries.
Other types of batteries and electronic devices
Visit SFRecycles or contact Recology at (415) 330-1300 for e-bike batteries, vaping devices, cell phones, and other items with built-in, non-removable batteries. Do not attempt to remove embedded batteries from these devices.
