San Francisco Environment Department Opens SF Climate Week with Green Business Expo in the Heart of Downtown
Day One of San Francisco’s Climate Week celebrates Green Businesses who are proving it’s possible to embrace, operate, and flourish with sustainability.
San Francisco, CA – Today, the San Francisco Environment Department (SF Environment) opened SF Climate Week with an exciting Earth Day Festival and Green Business Expo. The event, in partnership with the Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, and Climatebase, featured speakers from the San Francisco Environment Department, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Climatebase, and the small business community. This was the second joint Yerba Buena Gardens Earth Day and Green Business Expo, and the largest, attracting over 1000 visitors to downtown San Francisco.
This expo was an opportunity for San Francisco communities to discover new sustainable products and services from local Green Businesses while enjoying live music and entertainment from local Latin fusion band LoCura and DJ Lamont. Community-based organizations and other City Departments were also in attendance to give attendees information and ideas for taking action on climate and sustainability. Before the expo officially opened at noon, volunteers, led by SF Environment, participated in a neighborhood cleanup of the SOMA neighborhood.
“San Francisco’s Green Businesses show that sustainability can strengthen local commerce, reduce waste, and improve daily life at the same time,” said Tyrone Jue, Director of the San Francisco Environment Department. “That is the kind of practical climate action residents can see in their neighborhoods and support with their dollars.”
The fourth annual SF Climate Week (April 18-26) is the cornerstone of Earth Month. The week emphasizes the role of community, innovation, and technology in creating a sustainable future for residents, businesses, and community organizations. It brings together innovators and entrepreneurs to discuss key sustainability challenges and develop solutions that will lead to a healthier, more resilient San Francisco.
“SF Climate Week is one of the most inspiring moments of the year for our community. This year, we’re expecting potentially close to 60,000 people and more than 700 events across the Bay Area — bringing together founders, scientists, students, investors, policymakers, community leaders, and thousands of others working to build a better future,” said Evan Hynes, Co-Founder, Climatebase and Founder of SF Climate Week. “At a time when the challenges facing climate action can feel overwhelming, SF Climate Week is a reminder of just how much energy, creativity, and momentum exists in San Francisco and beyond. I’m incredibly excited to see this community come together once again to connect, collaborate, and accelerate climate solutions.”
The event also featured delicious food from local restaurants, a tree planting demo on Yerba Buena Gardens’ living rooftop, a mobile skate park, an immersive art installation, and many other educational activities from SF Environment, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, and partners.
“The Earth Day Festival was first held at the Gardens in 2024, and the impact was immediate where people of all ages came and learnt about this oasis and the value flora offers in the urban landscape, said Seve Ghose, Executive Director, Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy. “The partnership with the San Francisco Environment Department has been an essential piece the last couple of years in growing the reach and the programming while elevating the overall experience for all who attend, through the Green Business Expo.”
“When Michael and I started Andytown, we wanted to build the kind of business that contributes positively to our neighborhood and community around it,” said Lauren Crabbe, Owner & Founder of Andytown Coffee Roasters. “Becoming a Green Business was a natural extension of that mindset. We believe sustainability is about making thoughtful choices every day: how we source, how we operate, and how we show up for our city. We’re excited to participate in this event and to stand alongside other local businesses working to make San Francisco a better, more sustainable place.”
SF Climate Week continues to play a crucial role in advancing discussions and actions on climate change. Events are scheduled throughout the day, every day of the week, across the City. From fireside chats and social events to industry panels, there are many opportunities for every San Franciscan to participate. SF Environment is participating in multiple events for residents to learn and practice climate action.
