“Fragrance” is rarely a single ingredient; rather, fragrances can be blends of many different chemicals. Manufacturers are not required to list which chemicals are used in their fragrances, so it is safest to avoid scented products altogether.
Use the Precautionary Principle as a guide. Avoid products that list “fragrance” as an ingredient to limit potential exposure.
Ingredients to avoid
Avoid products that contain phthalates, which are a class of chemical that has been associated with reproductive harm, sperm damage, reduced testosterone, and premature birth.
Be aware that products containing “fragrance,” “perfumes,” or “parfum” may also contain phthalates, even if phthalates are not listed in the product ingredients.
Safter alternatives
Instead of using synthetic air fresheners, consider making a simmer pot for your home. Boil orange peels, cinnamon sticks, and spices of your choice in a pot of water on the stove to create a natural fragrance.
