The Environmental Justice (EJ) program provides support to local urban gardening projects. We’ve provided technical assistance and grants to groups involved in garden projects that benefit the health and food security of lower-income neighborhoods. We supported a community-based farmers market for residents in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood, and promoted community gardening and nutritional and horticulture workshops. These projects have provided youth with valuable “hands-on” experiences not only in growing healthy foods, but also reaching out to neighbors and gaining organizational and retail experience through selling food at farmers markets.
